Claudette Frady is the first wife of singer Roy Orbison one of the first successful rock and roll stars. He was nicknamed The Big O. Claudette was killed in a motorcycle accident while on a motorcycle holiday with her husband Roy. She died at the age of 27 years.

Roy Orbison is well known for his excellent vocals, switching from high notes to low tunes, great stage performances, and exquisite handling of the harmonica and guitar. He was born in 1963 and grew up in Texas. He loved country music, receiving his first guitar on his sixth birthday. He was featured on local radio shows, and in high school, he formed a band named ‘Wink Westerners’. They made music and received inspiration from Glenn Miller tunes and sampled country music.

The band gained popularity and they were invited for local gigs and earned four hundred dollars in their first gig. Orbison’s song Claudette opened the way for him to work with the Everly Brothers a famous music group that brought him to the limelight—his songs Oh Pretty Woman and Over topped Europe and gained him more fame.

Orbison had a successful career and was a mentor for artists like Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, and Bruce Springsteen. He always had sunglasses on as he was shy and had an issue with his vision, and would give the impression that he was blind. His first wife Claudette passed away in 1966 and he remarried Barbara Jakobs and had two sons Roy Jr and Alexander. Jakobs passed away in 2011 from cancer. Orbison passed away at the age of 52 due to a heart attack.

Family Life of Claudette Frady

Claudette and Orbison married in 1957 and had three children; Roy, Anthony, and Wesley. They were already married and had one son before his fame. Orbison would get away from his family when writing songs and his song Oh Pretty Woman which was an inspiration from his wife Claudette. He was always on the road and this brought a strain in their marriage leading to a divorce in 1964 after Claudette cheated but they got back together. They planned a reunion road trip, but unfortunately, had an accident and Claudette passed away.

Claudette while on a motorcycle holiday with her husband Roy in 1966, a truck driver pulled in front of her bike. She died an hour later in the arms of her husband. At the time of the accident, she was 24 years old. It was traumatizing for Roy which he expressed through his song ‘Too Soon To Know’.

In 1968, while Roy Orbison was on tour in England, his family home in Old Hickory Lake in Hendersonville, Tennessee caught fire and unfortunately, two of his sons, Roy and Anthony, died in the fire. His parents were able to save his three-year-old son Wesley. It was an overwhelming tragedy for him to lose his children and home two years after the death of his wife. His song, Too Soon to Know, a dedication to his late wife Claudette was number three On the British charts and was still a hit four decades later.
